Hand Pumps for Africa

Hand Pumps for Africa

S K Industries (SKI) has been manufacturing India Mark 2 hand pumps and related equipment in Patna, India since 1961, and today we export to more than 50 countries, with rural water and community development projects across most of Africa among our largest markets. From boreholes in West Africa to community wells in Southern and East Africa, SKI hand pumps are chosen by NGOs, government water programmes and private buyers who need equipment built to work for years with minimal maintenance.

Decades of experience supplying African water projects

Our pumps have been installed by aid agencies, government departments and private contractors across the continent, from village boreholes to school and clinic water points. We manufacture country- and programme-specific variants where needed — for example, a Ghana-modified India Mark 2 hand pump built to that programme’s own specification — alongside our standard UNICEF-approved designs. Our Zimbabwe-style metal treadle pump is widely used by smallholder farmers for irrigation from shallow wells, rivers and streams.

Hand pumps suited to African water projects

Depending on water table depth, budget and the type of project, we can recommend the right pump for your site:

  • India Mark 2 — the UNICEF-approved deep well hand pump, our most widely exported model for community boreholes
  • Afridev — designed specifically for community management and easy village-level maintenance, a common choice across Sub-Saharan Africa
  • India Mark 3 — a heavier-duty deep well pump for higher-use installations
  • Extra Deepwell — for boreholes beyond the standard depth range
  • Tara and Shallow Well pumps — for shallower water tables and lower-cost installations
  • Treadle pumps — foot-operated irrigation pumps for farms and smallholder agriculture

We also supply stainless steel spare parts and offer hot dip galvanizing for long-term corrosion resistance in demanding climates.

Packing and shipping to Africa

Export shipments to Africa often involve long sea journeys, multiple transshipments and rough handling along the way. We pack every pump individually in hessian and heavy-duty wrapping, clearly marked and organised by consignment, so pumps and parts arrive complete and undamaged whether your shipment is going to a coastal port or an inland, landlocked destination.
