Afridev spare parts for Mozambique
The Afridev is the standard hand pump adopted by the Government of Mozambique, and a 2021–22 UNICEF-published sustainability check found it on about 93% of the rural water points surveyed. The same study found that nearly three in four pumps had broken down at least once in the previous year, and over 40% had breakdowns lasting a week or more. Only about one in three water committees kept spare parts in stock.
Most of these stoppages come from a few wear parts: cup seals, bobbins, O-rings and bush bearings. Which Afridev spare parts wear out first?
Most repairs on an Afridev hand pump involve a small set of parts. The rubber and plastic parts inside the cylinder wear first: the cup seal and bobbins on the plunger and footvalve, and the O-ring in the plastic footvalve. At the pump head, the plastic bush bearings at the fulcrum and rod hanger wear with use. The pump needs four bearing sets. Rubber centralisers on the pumprods and the riser pipes also wear over time.
Since Rev 5 of the specification, the Afridev uses a brass plunger with a cup seal. Plastic plungers with cup seals are no longer part of the specification.

How many bush bearings does an Afridev pump need?
Each pump uses four bearing sets, each made of an outer bush and an inner bush. We supply them as a set.
Are Afridev parts interchangeable?
The Afridev specification requires 100% interchangeability of components and sub-assemblies, so parts made to the specification are designed to fit any Afridev pump. If you are unsure, send us the part or its dimensions and we will confirm.
Which spare parts should I keep in stock?
Cup seals, bobbins, O-rings and bush bearing sets are the parts that wear most. A spare set of these, plus a fishing tool and spanners, covers most repairs.
